What To Know Before Considering Filing a Home Insurance Claim for Roof Damage

Now that spring is in full swing we will start to see a lot more rain, hail and windstorms head our way. Of course the damage that occurs as a result is never pleasant but it is something that needs to be addressed in case there is real cause for claim on your insurance policy. Here are some tips for how to proceed if you think an insurance claim is in order.

Request a Quote from an Honest, Reputable Contractor

As Owner/Operator of family-owned Millard Roofing & Gutter, I have seen many instances where homeowners are swayed by their neighbors’ claim for insurance coverage. The truth is that roof damage is not a black and white issue. Rather, it’s subjective and following a storm you will need a quality, reputable contractor you can trust to provide an honest opinion as to the condition of your roof.

Be sure to select a contractor that has at least five to ten years in the business and can demonstrate quality customer service. We recommend choosing someone with a longstanding relationship with the Better Business Bureau. Companies endorsed by the BBB not only hold strong values of customer service and excellence but also they are held accountable to professional standards. Look for roofing companies that are certified with shingle companies, an added level of product and service excellence that passes on to you, the end client.

Be Sure a Claim Is Necessary Before Filing With Your Insurance Company

You may not realize it, but there is definitely a process at hand with insurance claims. While anyone can file a claim, it is important to be sure the claim is justified. It is critical to obtain an honest opinion from a contractor that will stand by their estimate. Not only will this help to support your claim but also it will ensure that your insurance premiums are not raised despite a claim rejection in case damage was not viable. One common example of this is when homeowners that have older roofs that may be more susceptible to damage than others. If a windstorm came through and impacted a roof like that, an insurance company may not consider accepting a claim.

The bottom line is that when you suspect roof damage, be sure to work with a quality roofing contractor with experience and knowledge to support their findings. Let them advise whether you should file a claim.
